Plant Care

  • Light - Bamboo palms prefer indirect, filtered light or shade, and should not be placed in direct sunlight. Sudden changes in lighting can shock the plant and cause damage.
  • Water - Bamboo palms like well-drained soil that's consistently moist, but doesn't tolerate standing water. Water one to three times a week. Overwatering can cause root rot, and signs include leaves with brown tips or black spots, or leaves that droop.
  • Fertilizer - Apply a granular slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season, but don't fertilize in fall and winter.
  • Pruning - Prune dead, browning, or yellowing leaves at the base of the stem to encourage fresh new growth.
  • Repotting - Repot your bamboo palm once a year into a pot one size bigger. The plant will grow as large as the pot you give it, so if you want to keep your bamboo palm small, don't increase the pot size very much when you repot.
  • Humidity - Take your bamboo palm for a lukewarm shower every now and then to clean the leaves and give it a humidity boost.
  • Pests and diseases - Bamboo palms are prone to common houseplant pests like aphids, mealybugs, fungus gnats, scale, and whiteflies. You can eliminate these pests with insecticide treatments.

Plant Benefits

  • Air quality - Bamboo palms can remove toxins from the air and absorb chemicals like benzene, formaldehyde, chloroform, and carbon monoxide. NASA's Clean Air Study recognized the bamboo palm's ability to break down these chemicals.
  • Low maintenance - Bamboo palms are easy to care for and resistant to most diseases and pests. They require bright, indirect light, regular watering, and can tolerate a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels.
  • Noise reduction - Bamboo palms can help reduce noise levels in the home, especially if they are placed near windows or doors. Their leaves absorb sound waves.
  • Aesthetically pleasing - Bamboo palms have tall, slender stalks of bamboo-like leaves that give them a tropical and exotic appearance
