The Calathea plant is also known as the Calathea insignis and the prayer plant. It is known for its striking foliage and showy yellow flowers. The plant's long, wavy green leaves with a brushstroke pattern resembling reptile skin raise and lower from day to night, a phenomenon called nyctinasty.

Plant Care

  • Light - Calathea plants prefer bright, indirect sunlight, but can handle low-light scenarios. Direct sunlight in the morning and afternoons is okay, as the light is less harsh.
  • Water - Water your calathea every 1-2 weeks, allowing the soil to dry out half way down between waterings. Expect to water more often in brighter light and less often in lower light.
  • Humidity - Calathea plants need a lot of humidity for better growth. You can provide some humidity by misting the leaves daily or standing on a tray of moist pebbles.
  • Temperature - Keep your calathea roseopicta in a room with temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid places where there are sudden temperature fluctuations.
  • Fertilizer - You can fertilize your calathea during the growing season as long as it's putting out new growth. A basic houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength should work well. You can also feed it with a high nitrogen fertilizer for three weeks in spring and summer. In fall and winter try to give the plant monthly feedings.
