Plant Care

  • Sunlight - Cuphea plants prefer full sun, but some varieties can tolerate part shade. 3–6 hours of morning sunlight a day is ideal.
  • Watering - Water potted plants once the top layer of soil is dry and pour off any excess water that gathers in the saucer. Cupheas planted in garden beds need to be watered as soon as the soil is dry. Water thoroughly in summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season. Use lime-free water.
  • Fertilizing - Fertilize twice a month in summer with a water-soluble fertilizer (such as 15-30-15) to keep plants flowering all season long. Apply organic fertilizer once a month.
  • Pruning - Prune in spring. Tip prune for bushy growth.
  • Protection - Remove dead, infected, or damaged parts of the plant. Although cupheas are generally pest resistant, they may occasionally be bothered by Japanese beetles, whiteflies, and aphids.
Plant Benefits
  • Ornamental - Cuphea plants are beautiful flowers with ornamental value.
  • Low maintenance - Cuphea plants are easy to grow and low maintenance, making them good houseplants.
  • Mildly salt tolerant - Mexican heather plants can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and are mildly salt tolerant.
  • Traditional medicine - Cuphea plants have some medicinal uses in traditional medicine, including treating fevers and coughs.
  • Seed use - The seeds of Cuphea plants are used in the cosmetic industry to produce soaps and skincare products.
  • Crop rotation - Cuphea has been shown to improve agricultural crops in North America when used in crop rotation.
