Hibiscus is a genus of subtropical woody shrubs and small trees. They are known for their brightly colored flowers that are trumpet-shaped with five or more petals. The flowers are bisexual, large, and showy, and can grow up to 25 cm wide.

Plant Care

  • Sunlight - Hibiscus plants prefer full sun, but can tolerate light shade. More shade will result in fewer and smaller flowers.
  • Watering - Hibiscus plants like to be watered, but not overwatered. Water when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Containers may need to be watered 3–4 times weekly at the beginning of summer and daily toward the end of summer. In the winter, when the plant is dormant, it may not drink as much.
  • Pruning - Hibiscus plants respond well to pruning during warm weather. Cut back the plant by about half in the early spring to maintain a nice shape and encourage growth. More branches means more flowers.
  • Pests - Check the plants weekly for aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites. If you discover an infestation, apply a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to the affected areas.

Plant Benefits

  • Yellow hibiscus is ideal for lifting one's spirits and bringing good fortune into your home. According to plant Vastu, the hibiscus should be grown in either the north or east. Roses signify love and passion and attract good luck and healing energy. It is considered as a Feng Shui lucky plant.
