Description

Vermiculite comprises a group of hydrated, laminar magnesium-aluminum-iron silicate minerals resembling mica. They are secondary minerals, typically altered biotite, iron-rich phlogopite or other micas or clay-like minerals that are themselves sometimes alteration products of amphibole, chlorite, olivine and pyroxene.

Uses

Vermiculite is an organic soil conditioner that can be used to improve the health of plants. It can be used in flower and vegetable gardens, potted plants, or to replace potting soil. Vermiculite can:
  • Improve root growth: Vermiculite promotes faster root growth and helps young roots anchor quickly.
  • Retain moisture: Vermiculite can absorb up to four times its weight in water and helps retain water for plants.
  • Provide nutrients: Vermiculite attracts nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
  • Protect seedlings: Vermiculite can protect seedlings from fungal diseases and damping-off.
  • Aerate soil: Vermiculite helps aerate soil, which can help plants grow vigorously.
  • Improve seed germination: Vermiculite light allows light through to encourage good germination.
